Purpose of life

1. Spiritual/Religious Perspective
Many religious and spiritual traditions teach that life’s purpose is to:

  • Realize or serve the Divine (e.g., God, higher power, universal consciousness)
  • Achieve spiritual liberation (e.g., Moksha, Nirvana, salvation)
  • Live ethically and compassionately, following moral teachings or scriptures
Example (Hinduism/Buddhism): Life is a journey of karma and rebirth, with the goal of attaining liberation (Mukthi/Moksha).

2. Philosophical Perspective
Philosophers have offered various answers, such as:
  • Creating your own meaning (Existentialism)
  • Living a life of virtue (Aristotle: “Eudaimonia” — flourishing through moral excellence)
  • Seeking truth and understanding (Socrates: “The unexamined life is not worth living.”)

3. Scientific Perspective
From a biological point of view, life’s purpose may be seen as:
  • Survival and reproduction
  • Contributing to evolution and the continuation of the species
But many scientists and thinkers also believe humans have evolved consciousness and morality, allowing us to define higher purposes for ourselves.

4. Personal/Emotional Perspective
Many people define their purpose through:
  • Love and relationships
  • Helping others / making a difference
  • Pursuing passions and creativity
  • Growth, learning, and experience
A Simple Reflection

Some say the purpose of life is not to find the answer, but to live fully, consciously, and meaningfully — to experience, learn, love, and leave the world better than you found it.
